Uppsala

Uppsala is Sweden’s 4th largest city and is located just a 18-minute train ride from Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport and a 40min train ride from Stockholm.

The Fyris river divides the city into two parts. The historic part, which holds historic sights such as the Uppsala Castle (Slottet) and its Botanic Garden and museums, Uppsala Cathedral (Domkyrka), and Uppsala University, which was founded in 1477 and is the oldest university in Scandinavia. The modern part of Uppsala holds the administrative, commercial and residential areas of Uppsala.

Uppsala dates back more than 2000 years, it was one of the main Viking settlements, the residence of the kings of the legendary Yngling dynasty and an important religious, economic and political center in Scandinavia. It was founded in 1286, but today is a modern, innovative and progressive city.

Given its scientific and academic heritage, Uppsala is a research and biotech hub, but also aims to be a leading sports city, with its several sports arenas for outdoor and indoor sports and sports clubs. Due to being a university city, Uppsala has a great restaurant and bar scene, and a wide range of hotel options for you and your family to have a great stay for GFNY Uppsala.

Course

GFNY Uppsala takes you from the dynamic, energetic bustle of Sweden’s 4th largest city to the breathtaking nature of Uppsala County.

The race week activities take place at Ulva Kvarn, an artisan and craft village just north of Uppsala that was built at the rapids of the Fyrisån river. You will be picking up your race packet, lining up for the start, and enjoying the post-race celebrations, music, awards, and the post-race BBQ at this charming, must-visit Uppsala destination, surrounded by Ulva Kvarn's relaxing and beautiful nature.

The race starts directly from Ulva Kvarn and heads northwest. At km 12, the long and medium courses split, the long route riders go straight, and medium course turn right.

The small, windy, twisty roads were created through history and shaped by nature and animal and human use, resulting in roads that are ultra fun for cycling: a constant up-down over gentle hills and left-right-left-right turns. The stillness and vastness of the Uppsala County nature will make you understand why this place was chosen thousands of years ago by the Vikings. Through preservation and care, Uppsala has guarded the breathtaking nature to this day.

The medium course of 67km travels over three sections of unpaved roads, totaling 14km. The roads are hard packed and in good condition for your road bike, you will not need any special bike or tires. Take care to obey road rules and exercise usual care as any time you ride and adhere to traffic laws on open roads.

Set in the tranquility of the glorious Uppsala countryside, the magnificent GFNY Uppsala long course loop will take you past dozens of small lakes, a wildlife refuge, nature preserves, forests, charming villages, horse farms, cattle ranches, and more. A section of the course travels along one of the designated Linnaeus walking trails, which the scientist covered on foot to study and classify plants, animals and minerals. This unpaved section is more technical than the others.

While there are no significant climbs on this course (the highest point of the race is at 100masl), it will give you the impression the course is flat. But the long route accumulates 1500m of climbing because the road is constantly rolling. Your legs will be constantly adjusting to the changing topography, which will probably be your biggest challenge of the day.

The long course travels over three sections of unpaved roads, with a total distance of 25km. The roads are hard packed and in good condition for your road bike, you will not need any special bike or tires. Take care to follow road rules, the course will not have police support and there is one stop sign and one yield sign, which you will have to obey and exercise usual care as any time you ride and adhere to traffic laws on open roads.

After crossing the finish line, regardless if you finished the long or medium course, you will get a medal and enjoy the post-race BBQ, music, festivities, and awards ceremony. Relive the incredible day with your family and friends, the impressions of this day and course will impress you as a cycling highlight of your year.

LONG COURSE IS A COMPETITION: Only the finishers of the long course are eligible for category rankings and Overall and Podium awards. If you want to race and be ranked in your category, you must complete the long course. Top 10% of finishers in each age group earn a spot in the Qualifier Corral at every GFNY World event.

MEDIUM COURSE IS NOT A COMPETITION: The riders of the medium course will be provided their start-to-finish time, but will not be ranked by finish time. All finish times will be listed in alphabetical order.

Perks included as part of GFNY Uppsala

THE JERSEY: All riders receive the official GFNY Uppsala race jersey, which is mandatory attire at the race. The jersey is designed in NYC and Made in Italy.

CHIP TIMING: GFNY Uppsala is a timed race. Each athlete has their own timing chip, which starts right after you cross the start line and stops when you cross the finish line. Timing results will be available at gfny.cc/results.

FINISHER MEDAL: Every GFNY Uppsala finisher receives a medal, no matter which distance they complete. All finishers also earn a “Finish” towards their 3x2023 GFNY medal or the 10x medal. Go to gfny.com/medals for more information on GFNY’s multi-finisher medals.
